Review: Chosen by P.C. and Kristen Cast

Warning: If you haven’t read the first 2 House of Night books, SPOILERS!

“Bloodlust and dark forces are at work at the House of Night…

Fledgling vampyre Zoey Redbird’s adventures at the school are about to take a mysterious turn. Those who appear to be her friends are turning out to be enemies. And oddly enough, sworn enemies are also turning into friends. So begins the gripping third installment of this “highly addictive series” (Romantic Times), in which Zoey’s mettle will be tested like never before. Her best friend, Stevie Rae, is undead and struggling to maintain a grip on her humanity. Zoey doesn’t have a clue how to help her, but she does know that anything she and Stevie Rae discover about the secretive and sinister power that’s turning dead fledglings into bloodsucking monsters must be kept secret from everyone else at the House of Night, where trust has become a rare commodity..."

Things are cracking down at the Tulsa House of Night.  After Professor Nolan is killed with a note left that seems to lead to the People of Faith Security is upped, leaving the school filled with Son of Erebus hotties.  Although Zoey is dating Erik, the best catch in school, she is still strongly tied to Heath through imprint due to her unusual bloodlust and although she tries to break things off with him, she always comes back to the same thing.  Then there is Loren Blake, the sexy poetry teacher that seems to have a thing for Zoey as well. But boys are the least of Zoey’s problems. With the higher security, Zoey and Aphrodite have to come up with another way to sneak out of school to help Stevie Rae who seems to be lost beyond hope and with Stevie Rae gone from the school, Zoey has to replace Stevie Rae’s position as Earth for the Dark Daughters ceremony and it seems that Aphrodite is the perfect fit, as awful as she might be.  With all these secrets flying around things are bound to fall out and fall apart.  Chosen is the third installment to the House of Night series and is filled with Love, Friendship, Betrayal, and Magic.

My Rating for this Book:

I truly enjoy reading this particular series.  For me it’s very much vampires meets Harry Potter with a more mature twist.  I was so into this book that for a while I had to quit reading it because I was too nervous about what I thought was going to happen.   I have read this series a few times through now, normally starting over each time a new book comes out so that I’m not missing anything, and one of the things that I particularly like is that it keeps evolving and therefore, although there are nine books, the story doesn’t get old.

The House of Night Series is written by P.C. and Kristen Cast.  P.C. cast has written several series and she has received several awards for them.  Kristin Cast is P.C.’s daughter and has written a few other series herself.  She currently goes to college in Oklahoma, where they both live.  To learn more visit www.pccast.net.

Has anyone else read this series?  If so, what do you think?  If not, these books are not only enjoyable, but they’re fast reads and you should totally check them out.

Review: Betrayed by P.C. & Kristen Cast

SPOILER ALERT: If you haven’t read the other House of Nights books you should hold off on reading this review!
“Fledgling vampyre Zoey Redbird has managed to settle in at the House of Night. She's come to terms with the vast powers the vampyre goddess, Nyx, has given her, and is getting a handle on being the new Leader of the Dark Daughters. Best of all, Zoey finally feels like she belongs—like she really fits in. She actually has a boyfriend…or two. Then the unthinkable happens: Human teenagers are being killed, and all the evidence points to the House of Night. While danger stalks the humans from Zoey's old life, she begins to realize that the very powers that make her so unique might also threaten those she loves. Then, when she needs her new friends the most, death strikes the House of Night, and Zoey must find the courage to face a betrayal that could break her heart, her soul, and jeopardize the very fabric of her world.”

With the ninth House of Night book just coming out a little over a month ago, I do believe it’s time our blog started getting caught up. With that said, here’s my review on book two, Betrayed.  If you haven’t read book one, Marked then let it be known (again), THERE ARE SPOILERS.

Zoey Redbird is finally settling in at the House of Night.  She has a new great group of friends that are almost equally as gifted as she is.  She has a mega hottie for a boyfriend and has become the leader of the Dark Daughters.  Everything is falling into place.  That is until Loren Blake, a full vampire, teacher, and poet starts taking a special interest in her.  On top of that weirdness, Neferet, her mentor and the high priestess is off, Heath, her human ex-boyfriend, accidently became her consort, her mom and step-loser came to visiting day and ruined it, and at the end of her first Dark Daughter ritual her best friend and roommate, Stevie Rae, rejects the change and dies.  There has also been local deaths that are pointing back to the House of Night.  Now the only person that Zoey has on her side is Aphrodite, the biggest bitch in the school.

I Rate This Book:

I first read the house of night series a few summers ago while I was life guarding.  They were great summer books.  They’re also fast reads.  I flew through the first six books and have reread them a few times since.  Something that I like in these books is that after the first few the books change point of views several times.  I also like that there are always new characters being introduced, so even though there are multiple books it still keeps in interesting without people getting all jumbled up and confused.

Review: Marked by P.C. and Kristen Cast

“One minute, sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird is a normal teenager dealing with everyday high school stress. The next, she’s Marked as a fledgling vampyre, forcing her to leave her ordinary life behind and join the House of Night, a boarding school where she will train to become an adult vampyre. That is, if she makes it through the Change—and not all of those who are Marked do. It sucks to begin a new life, especially away from her friends, and on top of that, Zoey is no average fledgling. She has been chosen as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx. Zoey discovers she has amazing powers, but along with her powers come bloodlust and an unfortunate ability to Imprint with Heath, who just doesn’t know how to take “no” for an answer. To add to her stress, she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers: when she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite group, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny—with a little help from her new vampyre friends."
In the House of Night series book 1: Marked, people don’t become vampires by being bitten.  When one goes through puberty their body can either go on to become a normal human adult or it can go in a different direction. From there you either reject the change and die or grow up to be a full vampire.  The day Zoey Redbird was marked her entire world fell apart: She had to move to a new home, go to a new school, learn completely new things, and make new friends.  Her mother and Step loser made it clear that she was going to go straight to hell for whatever she had done to cause God to punish her (and them).  Her best friend Kayla was repelled from her like she was the pague and turned out to be a real slut face by trying to get with Zoey’s exboyfriend Heath.  On top of it all her mark was different from all the other fledglings and it has caused her to be singled out by the top fledgling bitch, Aphrodite.  Things weren’t all bad though, she had a great roommate, Stevie Rae, a countrified bumpkin but super sweet and good hearted who introduced her to some new friends.  Her grandma and Heath, although not so welcomed on the later, have stuck by her side despite everything that is happening.  She had the approval of the smartest, most powerful, and beautiful vamp at the school, Neferet.  On top of it all she caught the attention of the hottest guy at school, Eric Night.

Marked is a new interesting take on vampires with a dash of Harry Potter.  The chapters are written in Zoey’s view only during the first book but you get more perspective throughout the series.  I love that the different characters still come completely to life even through just the main characters point of view.
